In response to a Government Accountability Office report on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), the Department of Veterans Affairs has decided to offer cognitive processing therapy and prolonged-exposure therapy to treat the disorder at its facilities. In cognitive processing therapy, the patient addresses conflicts by writing about the traumatic event in detail and then reading the story aloud repeatedly in and outside of session.
