St. Louis (KSDK) March 10, 2011-- The surgical suites at the John Cochran VA Medical Center in St. Louis reopened after having been shut down since February 2 following the discovery of potentially contaminated surgical equipment.

The medical center officials said experts, private vendors and independent consultants examined the center's Sterile Processing Department to find the reason surgical trays were pitted with metallic corrosion after competing wash cycles.

While multiple investigations were unable to determine a single source for the etching, facility staff rectified every potential issue, performed multiple test cycles, and brought in thousands of new instruments as replacements, according to medical center officials.

Medical center officials said also independent consultants verified the process is safe to move forward.

Last year, the medical center notified 1,800 veterans they may have been exposed to H.I.V. and hepatitis at the facility's dental clinic.

NewsChannel 5 is at a press conference about the reopening and will have more information when it becomes available.
